Two young women from Melbourne are in hospital in a critical condition and more travellers are sick after consuming what is believed to be methanol in Vang Vieng, Laos.

The 19-year-olds consumed the drinks on Thursday and are in a grave condition, said 3AW drive host Jacqui Felgate, who has spoken to a father of one of the women out of Bangkok hospital. The father had flown to Bangkok to be by his daughter’s bedside.

“A horrendous situation, these girls critically ill, and they’re only 19 years of age on one of those wonderful trips that so many young people do,” Felgate said on Monday.

At least 10 other people were sick, she said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comment.
